Shortage of skilled tradespeople
I was reading again an article on shortage of skilled trades people in Canada.
I would rather say there is a shortage of skilled people generally speaking.
Trades people are identified as being, among others: electricians, carpenters, auto technicians, bricklayers, horticulturalists and chefs.
There are vocational training programs, they are always full and employers are lining up to offer jobs.
But it’s very well known that the demand for trades is cyclic. With the real estate and construction booming, the demand was way higher than the offer.
Lots of auto technicians left their jobs to re-qualify as carpenters; was it because they liked the job better? No, it was because of the higher income.
As a consequence some auto repair shops went into bankruptcy.
I won’t even touch the subject of outrageously high wages. The good news is that the construction market started slowing down; maybe in a year or two we would afford to do our home renovation without getting a second mortgage in order to pay the trades people.
